I got into Cuban salsa dancing about two years ago and now have decided its time to get into Cuban music as well, already being an amateur flautist I went about searching.

I discovered Fay Roberts

Does anyone have any advice for me about obtaining Cuban sheet music (seems to only be available in Cuba?)
Any artists you'd recommend I'd listen to?
Or are there other forums besides this one, I should try?

Thanks a lot !

There are so many wonderfully composed prog rock solos out there that I decided to attempt learning a few Jordan Rudess keyboard solos on the flute. The music is very challenging but playable. Has anyone out there in the flute world learned a cool solo, like a guitar solo or any "rock" solo? Am I the only flutist who likes progressive rock?

For some reason, I think my flute sounds really, really good in hot weather. I think it has something to do with the air density. My husband and I were having a discussion during lunch, because we were also wondering about the effect of humidity on all this. I know the air is less dense when it is hot, but is the air more or less dense when the humidity is high? And why would lighter air affect my sound? Is it just easier to get the sound moving? Hmm.

I am hoping someone will know the answer to these questions!

I've been playing the flute for about 6 months after a hiatus of several years. I'm playing with a community band, and as our big yearly concert is approaching, we've been putting in lots of extra practice time, and I've been putting in more of my own. For the last week or so the amount of time I've been able to practice has gotten shorter and shorter because the ring and little fingers of my right hand have been sore. Now the pain has moved into my my right wrist (the outer side.) Do you have any tips for correcting this? I've been looking at my right arm position relative to my wrist, but I don't know if there is anything wrong with it or not. Those last two fingers are my weakest, but they're some of the most important. I have joint hypermobility (double-jointed) and when my fingers are tired or when I'm stretching my little finger to play the lower notes, the knuckle of that little finger has a tendency to "pop out," making it painful and harder to move. How can I strengthen not just my fingers but my joints?

I purchased a flute from a nice man on Craig's List.. The pads looked in pretty good shape, and there wasn't too much wear and tear that I noticed (other than a small dent an inch below the lip plate). It came in a case and I soon found out that the body and foot really, really have a tough time coming apart and each time I took it apart, I was really scared of bending the keys because I can't get the best grip on either piece.. So, I've just left it that way, and it lives on my bookshelf; assembled and out of the case for the last few months. I'm moving soon and I really don't want to leave my flute wild and roaming about a heavily packed car. Can any of you give me some tips on how to get the two pieces apart without going to a repair shop? (I know it probably needs a check up and adjustment, but I'm waiting until I have more money. The flute is definately not a poor man's instrument..)

Has anyone tried playing music from the TV series Rome? Anybody else managed to obtain a score for it?
I love the opening song and apparently Jeff Beal used a lot of flutes.

Thanks in advance!

What are some awesome pieces that you think aren't played nearly enough? I'm looking for something to play this semester a bit outside of the typical flute repertoire. I played the Liebermann Concerto last semester, so stuff in that range of difficulty would probably be the best. Thanks in advance!

(I've been listening to the Khachaturian Concerto, trying to decide whether or not I'm up to learning it... does anyone know if it's as ridiculously hard to learn as it sounds like it is?)
